CSR policy
Environment
Fighting climate change is a collective challenge that requires the involvement of all stakeholders. Although fishing is cyclical by nature, the effects of climate change are already affecting SAPMER’s activities.
Our commitment
For many years now, SAPMER has been working to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly in its vessels operations which account for the majority of its carbon footprint. Key initiatives include :
- Diesel-electric propulsion systems for purse seiners
- Implementation of econometers to optimize fuel efficiency
- Training captains on optimal navigation speeds
By tracking both direct and indirect GHG emissions, SAPMER has introduced new action plans starting in 2023 to further reduce its carbon footprint.
Resource preservation
The sustainability of our activities relies primarily on the availability of fishery resources. As such, stock preservation is naturally the top priority of our CSR policy, which is built around three key pillars :
Strict onboard monitoring
A fisheries observer or independent monitor is present on every vessel
Certified sustainable fishing practices
Ensuring eco-friendly operations that protect both marine ecosystems and local communities
Respect for quotas
A key part of SAPMER’s expertise and commitment to responsible fishing
Sustainable development objectives
With its CSR policy, SAPMER voluntarily integrates social and environmental considerations into its business activities. This approach aims to maintain performance while promoting energy transition and minimizing natural resource impact.
Zero Hunger
SAPMER’s primary mission is to provide the highest-quality seafood for a healthy and nutritious diet. The rapid freezing process ensures optimal preservation of flavor and nutritional properties.
Decent work and economic growth
Fishing is driven by passionate professionals, both at sea and on land. To bring back these exceptional species, SAPMER’s adventure relies on nearly a thousand employees of a dozen nationalities, offering safe working conditions and opportunities for professional growth.
Responsible consumption and production
Sustainable fishing certifications not only guide SAPMER’s operations but also raise awareness among consumers. Additionally, most species are subject to quotas, ensuring stock renewal and responsible management.
Aquatic life
The ocean is much more than just our working environment: it’s SAPMER’s reason for existence and our passion. Protecting marine life and ecosystems is a top priority, achieved through selective fishing techniques and minimizing environmental pressure.
Human Resources
Employee training
Preparing SAPMER’s teams for future challenges is a key priority of its training policy :
- Developing skills to foster innovation and empowerment
- Meeting regulatory requirements, particularly in terms of health, safety and the environment
- Encouraging career mobility by supporting personal development programs
Territorial roots
SAPMER has always been deeply connected to Réunion, SAPMER is fully aware of the importance of its territorial anchorage and its development especially within an island economy.
New horizons
Whenever SAPMER expands into new territories (Mauritius & Seychelles in the 2000s, Concarneau since 2018), it ensures that the economic benefits extend to the entire ecosystem.
Solidarity and community support
SAPMER actively supports local associations and initiatives, including donations of seafood products to charitable organizations or financial support for maritime rescue teams and food banks.
Boosting the local economy
SAPMER prioritizes local suppliers and partners in all its operating regions, helping to strengthen regional economies.
Ethics and compliance
At sea and on land, SAPMER and its employees are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity in their interactions with government authorities, suppliers and customers.
Our commitment
To ensure integrity, SAPMER has implemented a compliance program based on two core principles: Anti-corruption policies and the protection of human rights.
This compliance framework applies to all employees, as well as external and temporary collaborators working with SAPMER.
If you have any questions or would like to report a point that seems contrary to a commitment made by the SAPMER, please contact the compliance officer at the following address : compliance@sapmer.com
Gender equality index
SAPMER is committed to promoting professional equality, despite the structural gender imbalance in the fishing industry.
As of December 31, 2024, women represented 14.7% of SAPMER’s workforce, though none were employed as fishing crew members.
Our activity
Industry Challenges Offshore fishing remains a male-dominated sector, despite improvements in working conditions and the attractiveness of fishing careers.
Under French labor law, companies with 50 or more employees must calculate and report gender pay gap indicators annually.
However, as of February 21, 2025, SAPMER’s 2024 Gender Equality Index could not be calculated, as the maximum possible score under the applicable indicators was below the required 75-point threshold
